Keynote Speakers

Bessel van der Kolk, MD

Bessel A. van der Kolk M.D. has been active as a clinician, researcher and teacher in the area of posttraumatic stress and related phenomena since the 1970s. His work integrates developmental, biological, psychodynamic and interpersonal aspects of the impact of trauma and its treatment. His book Psychological Trauma was the first integrative text on the subject, painting the far ranging impact of trauma on the entire person and the range of therapeutic issues which need to be addressed for recovery.

 

Dr. van der Kolk and his various collaborators have published extensively on the impact of trauma on development, such as dissociative problems, borderline personality and self-mutilation, cognitive development in traumatized children and adults, and the psychobiology of trauma. He was co-principal investigator of the DSM IV Field Trials for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. His current research is on how trauma affects memory processes and brain imaging studies of PTSD.

Mark Gordon, MD

Dr. Gordon has been a strong advocate of Integrative Medicine and the promotion of preventive medicine thought the correction of underlying hormonal deficiencies. He was instrumental in promoting the recognition of Traumatic Brain Injury as a cause of hormonal deficiency in the hallmarked presentation on ESPN’s Outside the Lines (Jan. 2007).

 

His book, The Clinical Application of Interventional Medicine (2008), is recognized by his peers as a primer for the standards of care and assessment for interventional endocrinology (anti-aging medicine). His academic standards and medical knowledge have been recognized by UCLA and USC where he holds the position as Voluntary Associate Clinical Professor at the Keck School of Medicine (1998-date). As Medical Director of CBS Studios (2001-date), he has participated on projects with HBO, ESPN, CNN, FOX, Good Morning, and a number of international programs  

 

Dr. Gordon continues to work with veterans groups providing full and partial funding for those with injuries received while in the theater of war.   Dr. Gordon is owner and Medical Director of Millennium-TBI, located in Encino California.

Dirk De Ridder, MD, PHD

Dirk De Ridder, M.D., Ph.D., is a professor of neuromodulation and neurosurgery in Antwerp, Belgium. As founder and director of the BRAI²N (Brain Research Center Antwerp for Innovative & Interdisciplinary Neuromodulation) and the TRI Tinnitus Unit (Tinnitus Research Initiative), he uses both EEG and fMRI navigated non-invasive (TMS, tDCS, tACS, LORETA neurofeedback) and invasive (implants) neuromodulation for research and treatment purposes.

Sayyed Mohsen Fatemi, PhD

Dr. Sayyed Mohsen Fatemi (PhD, University of British Columbia, 2003, Post Doctorate, Harvard University, 2009-2013) has done his postdoctoral studies in the Department of Psychology at Harvard University in areas of social, clinical, health and cross cultural psychology with a focus on Mindfulness. He is an Associate and a lecturer at Harvard University and works in areas of social and cross cultural psychology. He is a frequently published author and poet with numerous conference presentations. In addition to teaching at Harvard, he has also taught at the University of Massachusetts in Boston, Boston Graduate School of Psychoanalysis, the University of Toronto, Western Washington University, Beijing Normal University and the University of British Columbia.

 

Dr. Fatemi’s present areas of research focus on the psychological implications of mindfulness for negotiations, media, cultural understanding and communication, creativity and leadership, persuasive and influencing skills, clinical and counseling psychology. He has been the keynote speaker of a number of international conferences and as a licensed and registered psychologist works on the implication of mindfulness for stress management, anxiety management, panic attack, interpersonal problems and personality disorders. He is also a popular guest of multiple television and radio programs and has consulted and coached corporate managers and executives on the application of mindfulness to enhance a broad array of vital business skills.

 

His work includes the development of mindful intercultural understanding, negotiation, communication, conflict resolution, influencing, team building, presentation skills, creative decision making, and crisis management.

Sam Blakeslee, PhD

 

Dr. Blakeslee founded the Institute for Advanced Technology and Public Policy at Cal Poly in 2012. With a portfolio of experience as a scientist, business owner and legislator, his goal is to bring these diverse worlds together with cross-disciplinary thinkers at Cal Poly to solve some of the most complex public policy challenges facing society today.Dr. Blakeslee graduated from San Luis Obispo High School and attended Cuesta College. He first worked in construction, then attended U.C. Berkeley where he earned bachelor's and master's degrees in geophysics. He was awarded a Ph.D. from U.C. Santa Barbara for his work in seismic scattering, micro-earthquake studies and fault-zone attenuation. As a strategic planner and senior research scientist with Exxon, he received a patent for his innovative work in geologic imaging. Blakeslee was elected to the California State Assembly in 2005 and later to the State Senate. Elected by his fellow legislators, Blakeslee served a term as Assembly Minority Leader. In this role, he was a member of the "Big 5" with responsibility for negotiating the state budget and major policy initiatives. He also served and held leadership positions on a variety of legislative committees focusing on agriculture, energy, banking, environmental quality, education and other fields. He successfully authored dozens of bills to evolve and reform policy related to energy, the environment, health care, job creation, lobbying reform, public and worker safety, veterans' affairs and other areas of concern.

Prior to joining the Institute for Advanced Technology and Public Poly, Lance was a U.S. Army Airborne Infantryman in a Reconnaissance Surveillance Target Acquisition Unit. In 2007, while serving in Iraq, Lance was severely wounded and spent ten months recovering in an Army hospital before being medically retired. Lance became a spokesman for veterans and veteran issues throughout the country speaking on topics such as PTSD and veteran suicide. In 2010, Lance worked for California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger raising awareness and support for veterans in Washington DC, speaking at the White House, the Pentagon, Department of Labor, Department of Education, Department of Veteran Affairs, and addressing the full Congressional Democratic Caucus. Lance used the Post-9/11 GI Bill and holds a Bachelors degree in Political Science from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo.
